Etihad has developed a strong relationship with the London based Rugby Union club which sees the airlines logo on the front of the Harlequins’ famous quartered shirt as well as on the roof of the Twickenham Stoop stadium, visible on the flight path to London Heathrow.
Etihad has been supportive of the club since the sponsorship began back in 2007. We have used the sponsorship of Quins to help develop the clubs relationship with the local community in Abu Dhabi, as well as with fans around the world.
Etihad has also been very proud to use its relationship with Harlequins and Abu Dhabi Harlequins to develop the local rugby within Abu Dhabi. Since 2008, Etihad Airways has hosted the two week long Etihad Airways Junior Rugby Festival. This involves Quins players coaching 500 local Emirati and International children. This is followed by the Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Harlequins Junior Rugby Tournament which is the largest junior rugby tournament in the Middle East.
Since the beginning of the sponsorship, we have supported The Etihad Airways Curtain Raiser Cup which is the premier cup competition for teams from U7's through to U12's in London and the South East of England. With the chance of contesting the Grand Final on the main pitch at the Twickenham Stoop, in front of the famous Harlequins' crowd.
Played prior to each Harlequins' home fixture, within the Twickenham Stoop Stadium and the surrounding community pitches, the Curtain Raiser Cup has been motivating and inspiring young rugby players to fulfil their potential for well over a decade and Etihad is delighted to be a part of this junior rugby initiative.
Most recently Etihad offered Quins fans the chance to escape the winter and travel to Abu Dhabi to watch the LV = Cup game against London Wasps at the World famous Emirates Palace.
On Friday 20 May Harlequins beat Stade Francais 19-18 to win the 2011 Amlin Challenge Cup. The final at the Cardiff City Stadium in Wales was an enthralling encounter in which a late try for wing Gonzalo Camacho, followed by conversion from Nick Evans, was enough to earn Quins their third European Challenge Cup.
